“How are you coping with living alone in Malta during the COVID-19 pandemic?”

If I had a Euro for every time I was asked this question in the last couple of weeks, I would have €10 🙂

My name is Vitaly and I’m originally from the biggest country in the world – Russia. I moved to Malta almost two years ago when I randomly applied for an internship in Malta. After my graduation from an international university in Lithuania, I had only one more step to do in order to get my bachelor’s degree is to accomplish a practical part of the tuition – internship in a company. During that time I was extremely busy with my final project and I have no chance to look for the internship options. However, I got lucky since one of my university friends recommended me to apply in a company from which she already received confirmation regarding her practicum. The company was specialising in the distribution of electronic components worldwide and they had two main offices – one in Germany, the other in Malta. Since I never been on that beautiful island before I decided that even though I have to finish my internship I don’t have to lose my summer, therefore, I applied to Malta.

Long story short, and it’s hard to believe that already two years passed. Since that time I have met many amazing people, changed my job, place of living and traveled a lot around Europe. I could never imagine that a world pandemic with COVID-19 would occur in my memory. I had many plans in my mind, and I haven’t thought that I will have to postpone it all due to such circumstances. Nevertheless, I strongly believe that the current situation is exactly a moment when everyone should take a pause and analyze what they have already achieved and what is next. Our modern lifestyle is making people too busy to think about such essential things and break down their actions and goals in a daily routine. I strongly believe that at the moment our planet is giving us that chance and everyone should use it wisely. Many of my friends from Russia and all over the world are constantly asking me how I’m surviving these days completely alone here on that small island. Well, at that moment I’m trying to use that time mostly for my personal development and self-improvement.

First of all, I continue to read the books which I always had on my list and I’m happy that I brought that many books from home. I think that reading is super important in our daily life because it makes the brain constantly work and analyze new information. Reading gives us new ideas for creation, experiments, and self-development. Therefore, I’m trying to read at least 30 minutes per day or more. Even that small amount of time makes such a big difference if you do it on a daily basis. If you don’t have that habit I encourage you to try it out, however, find a book that really fits your interests and start from it. Soon you will notice how a simple book changes your way of thinking and brings to your mind many fresh and interesting ideas.

My second important occupancy which helps me to cope with my daily routine is experimenting a lot with my food. Actually, it came from the first one since recently I have read a book where the author is telling a lot about a healthy lifestyle. He strongly believes that the health of our body and soul consists of three elements: the water we drink, the food we eat, and the air we breathe. Indeed, you don’t need to think about it for a long time in order to realize that it’s actually the way it is. As a result, I started to work a lot on my food selection by substituting what he calls “dead food” on “alife food”. By “dead food”, he is considering the food which is getting heat treatment more than 41-celsius degrees. That process of substitution is not easy to achieve, however, now I have all the time available for cooking and experimenting with my food. Step by step I will try to achieve it and find out how it’s going to change the general state of my body.

The third thing which helps me to survive these days is to spend more time with my family and friends by having daily online calls. At the moment the majority of my closest people are in the same situation as everyone in the world and most of them are constantly staying home. Therefore, it’s extremely easy to reach everyone and now I almost forgot that someone is not answering my calls or telling me that they are too busy to speak. As a result, even though I know that between us is still a big distance, but I’m feeling more engaged in their lives by spending more time with my closest people.

In conclusion, I want to encourage everyone who reads my story to use that available time wisely. Constantly develop your great personality and learn new ways of how to achieve and improve it. Experiment with your lifestyle, set new goals and spend as much as possible with your closest people. Try not to watch movies all the time and read useless news from social media, just take a first step and you will explore how wisely you can use available time during the world pandemic.
