According to Forbes magazine, team building activities are a key investment for any organisation. They help to improve team cohesion, communication and collaboration, and are great at mitigating conflict. Furthermore, these activities can influence the workplace environment, leading to a more positive atmosphere at work as well as boosting company morale.
Here are some tips and tricks when it comes to incorporating team building activities at your next corporate event
1.Breaking the ice
Oftentimes, the hardest aspect of a team building activity is breaking the ice. Therefore, the initial activities should be aimed at easing pressure. ‘Networking bingo’ is a good example of an activity that does this.
Employees are given cards with nine boxes drawn on them. A particular characteristic is included in each one of the boxes e.g. a surname that ends with G, owns a sports car or plays the guitar. The participants must find co-workers that fit that characteristic, filling in the grid with names. Obviously, the person who finishes first wins the game, but it’s a good way for employees to learn more about each other.
2.Bonding
Personal games are a great way of encouraging the team to bond. The purpose of bonding games is to create a space where the employees can get to know each other’s background and life experiences. ‘Hero, Highlight, Hardship’ is an activity that encourages everyone to share. Each individual has to mention a person that impacted his/her life in a positive way, a major highlight of his/her life and hardships that he/she had to face.
3.Communicating more effectively
The game ‘Human Knot’ fosters teamwork and communication. Each employee has to stand in front of another employee, putting their right hand out. Each individual must grab a random person’s right hand with his/her own, doing the same thing with the left hand. The group must untangle the human knot together, and this really encourages the employees to communicate with each other in achieving a common goal.
4. Add a touch of fun
‘Air band battles’ are a great way of ending a team building event. Divide your office into bands composed of singers, bassists, guitarists, drummers and keyboardists, and have them rock out to your office’s favourite tunes. Get ready for an array of weird contorted faces and rock star moves. This activity highlights each individual’s personality, and wraps up the event in an entertaining way!
